“Dirt” Pudding Recipe

Hey everyone! Per request I am excited to share this super easy “dirt” recipe with you! This is one of our favorite desserts. It has taken some trial & error, but I think I’ve nailed down the perfect recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 package of double stuffed Oreo cookies
  • 2 (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding
  • 4 C whole milk
  • 8 oz. cream cheese- room temperature*
  • 1/4 C butter- room temperature*
  • 1 C powdered sugar
  • 8 oz. Cool Whip
  • Gummy Worms are optional!

** It is very important ingredients are at room temperature- the consistency will not be right & it will not blend well if they are not at room temp.

Directions:

  1. Put Oreos in a large gallon bag or two to crush. Use a rolling pin or wine bottle to crush into chunks. You also can put some of the Oreos in a food processor to create a fine dust to put directly on top.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding with milk for 2 minutes until thoroughly mixed. Let sit for at least 5 minutes.

3. While pudding is sitting, beat together the cream cheese and butter on medium speed until fluffy- 3 minutes or so. A Kitchen Aid is great for this step.

4. Reduce speed to low and add the powdered sugar. Gradually increase speed until fluffy texture is reached.

5. Using a rubber spatula, fold the cream cheese mix into the chocolate pudding. Then fold the cool whip in until completely combined.

6. Assemble your dish- it can be done using any type of pan, dish, mini cups, etc. Alternate layers of the pudding mix/Oreos (and gummy worm if desired).

Sometimes I top with the fine dust, depending on the mood.

7. Let chill for at least five hours. Overnight is best!

8. Enjoy!

    1. hahah gotta do what you gotta do, right?! Ohhh and that’s smart with the garlic, Imma keep that in mind, lol. Have a great week, girl!

      1. You’re doing awesome ! Don’t forget how great you did last month too- gotta celebrate those victories !

  1. This is one of my favorite desserts but I’ve never actually made it myself! I may have to use this recipe to make it for one of my holiday parties this year 🙂 thanks for sharing!

  2. Looks creamy and crunchy – satisfies all cravings for comfort food plus texture in one fell swoop, plus you get to have the rest of the 1/2 package of Oreos that are left to munch on. This is the first year since 2011 that I bought sweets for myself for Christmas … I gave up sweets in 2011 and have been craving them (probably reading all your blog posts did it!) so bought some Pepperidge Farm cookies that look like what I remember growing up on – among them those wedding cookies. Well, stop my beating heart with those melt-in-your-mouth gems! Aren’t you lucky Mackenzie that this is DJ’s favorite treat so you get to indulge a lot!

    1. Exactly!!! It’s the texture I think I love the most about it- so light and fluffy, but packed with flavor!

WOAH- no sweets since 2011?! My hat is off to you, Linda! Ohhh man Pepperidge farm cookies are soooo goood. I hope you enjoy every single nibble 🙂

      1. My mom used to make something similar to Dirt Pudding without the Oreos, and she would mix instant coffee crystals in with the chocolate pudding and the dry Dream Whip and mix it with milk. I should look in her recipe books and see if she wrote it down how much coffee as that mocha taste was wonderful I like that light and fluffy stuff. I did swear off sweets and salty snacks the same year and been good with both. I’m hoping having another taste was not a bad idea. I decided earlier this year to buy mixed nuts and cashews and ate them all right away (you may remember that episode as you said you had lots of nuts around the house). You probably eat them in moderation. 🙂 A friend of mine brought some home-made treats for me last Christmas and for my birthday made this oversized cupcake and I thought “hmm, maybe I should go back again to sweets – hopefully not go crazy and overindulge.” I am looking forward to them.

      2. Oh that sounds good!!! I am game for anything mocha flavored- If you do find it and if you want to I’d love to see that recipe 😍😋 man oh man- I couldn’t give up salty ! Maybe even above sweet! That’s just amazing- salty cashews are a staple- I have more than the standard serving per day, that’s for sure- and I love them in my daily ice cream cone 😂 I think you absolutely should enjoy – that oversized cupcake sounds divine! When is your birthday?

      3. I will look and see if I can find it and will share for sure – hopefully my mom jotted it down somewhere and it wasn’t just in her head. She had a looseleaf binder of all her recipes separated by types and was pretty organized so perhaps she did that as well. She also used to make a creamy mocha frosting – I like angelcake so sometimes she’d make up some of that mocha frosting to put on the angel cake. My birthday is not til April – a Spring baby.

      4. Aw thanks so much- but no worries if you can’t find it 🙂

Woahhhh mocha frosting sounds incredible!!! Yum!

Oh good to know! One year I wrote down all other bloggers birthdays, but have gained new friends since then. Have a great rest of the week!

      5. I am going to look – I took one look at a book my had on “knockoff recipes” … I got her that book a long time ago from a woman who prided herself on being the “Recipe Detective” – she had determined the ingredients and called the recipe something similar, but always a funny name. So there were blank pages and I was sure my mom would have written it there. She used to make a “friendship tea” years ago – it was a combo of orange Tang and powdered tea. I don’t even know if they still make powdered tea but it had cinnamon in it and was nice for Winter. I will find it the mocha frosting was wonderful too on just plain angel cake.

      6. Ooo the Recipe Detective does sound intriguing!! And the friendship tea sounds so delicious- yummy. I have never heard anything like that before, but I bet it’d be perfect for this time of year. And mocha frosting on angel cake sounds like a dream! I haven’t had angel cake in forever- uh oh now I am craving it!

      7. My next-door neighbor liked it so we would take turns buying one and halving it and sharing the other half. I will write down the Friendship Tea too – it is just Tang, Instant Tea and Cinnamon – I wonder if they still make instant tea? I’ll have to look. It is good.

    1. Right? It was always a nostalgic treat for me, then when DJ and I started dating his family had it at their home for holidays and I was reintroduced to the yumminess of it ! Now it has become one of my favorites too!

  3. Omg I’ve never had this! It looks so good though 😍😍😍 I think gummy worms are a must with this!!!! It is ‘dirt’ pudding after all haha! Thanks for sharing Mack x

    1. Hehe exactly! DJ doesn’t prefer them and it’s kind of “his dessert”, but I wouldn’t mind the gummies at all! mmmm mmm!

    1. It’s sooo addictive too- that’s why I can only make it on holidays because it’s so easy to eat- so light & fluffy & yummy!!

    1. Right?! It’s kind of classified as a “kids treat”, but it became my favorite as an adult 😋😋😋

  4. Yum! I used to love having this as a kid! We would have it in little cups with gummy worms in the “dirt”

    1. Hahah, oh man this stuff is soo good! I hope you get the chance to try it out one day! Have a great rest of the week, girl!

  5. You know me…anytime a recipe has “softened cream cheese” in it I HAVE to try it. I think the grand kids will love this version. It’s better than mine!

      1. Nope. It’s true. Yours is going to be a huge hit. I also have to make “Oreo Coal” for my one granddaughter who has been very snoopy lately. She’s getting that Christmas morning. LOL

      2. My daughter-in-law is getting the Oreos tomorrow. I’ll hold off making the coal until closer to Christmas. And, considering my granddaughter’s behavior even today, coal is definitely her FIRST gift. lol

      3. Oh, Kenzie. This child is just itching to be left out for the wolves. LOL She’s SO nosey. But in most ways she’s very good so we probably won’t dump her in the woods with no crumbs.

      4. I’m seriously laughing out loud- you crack me up! hahah. I so missed your sense of humor. Hope you are having a great weekend, Elizabeth.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing, Mackenzie!! I’m definitely saving this to make sometime. Can’t wait to try it! It definitely looks incredible and I’m a sucker for anything Oreo, haha.

    1. yessss!! I like it thicker crumbles in the middle and then the fine dust right on top! such a fun mixture of textures. mmm mmm!

    1. Hi, Karalee! Aww I hope you all enjoy 🙂 It’s definitely a favorite of ours and perfect for all ages! Happy happy birthday to your daughter 🙂
