Huge Announcement! We are moving to….

Hey y’all!! I’m pretty excited to finally publish this post 🙂 I wanted to get all caught up on everything else before I filled in all these deets. So, many of you might know that DJ has been applying for grad schools. Well, I’m so stinkin’ excited to announce he was accepted into his #1 choice and we are moving to Austin, Texas this summer!!! I am so dern proud of him & happy for him (us)!!

Austin, TX.jpg

It’s pretty cool how this all came together, and I truly believe God’s hand has been in this whole process.

So y’all know how much I love the Bay Area. DJ loves it too, but I adore it on anotha level. When DJ started talking about applying for grad schools out-of-state, I became uneasy. The thought of leaving filled me with a twinge of dread. We love our life here, although we had never planned on staying here past a few years. I would have gone wherever he wanted and knew the move was inevitable… but I couldn’t wrap my head around the actual reality of leaving this place we now call home. However, when he said he was interested in a school in Austin, I surprisingly found myself excited and at peace about the idea.

DJ meticulously perfected his application. We prepped for his interview together into the late hours of many evenings. And finally…*the* weekend came! The interview seemed to go well (of course DJ humbly downplayed just how well; if he says it went “pretty good” that means he knocked it out of the park). We flew back from that weekend ecstatic and hopeful as ever! Seeing just how badly he wanted this made me want it for him all the more.

Fast forward a month later. DJ gently woke me up super early in the morning. The only other time he has done that was to tell me our fish died (RIP Spanky Tom), so I panicked. Immediately he told me with all his typical DJ composure that he was accepted. Well, I lost any semblance of composure and jumped up & fist pumped the air about a hundred times. We hugged, I cried… it all became official… We are moving to Austin. We both feel an overwhelming peace about saying goodbye to our Bay Area home, an emotion I never thought would coexist with the idea of leaving. Oh, and logistically, I’ll be able to continue school online and fly to NC for on-campus intensives/ do my clinicals locally for those wonderin’.

We are probably going to move in June/July depending on apartment move-in dates and our schedules. I’m feeling nostalgic writing this as I started this very blog to record our California adventures….. but we are ecstatic to start this next chapter…. next stop: The Lone Star state!

  1. Oh How fabulous! Congratulations! God does have a plan for you! You will love the Music Town…Austin! So beautiful!
We head to see family in Texas about two times a year. They live about an hour from Austin. We were just in Texas and visited a very cute town called Gruene, pronounced Green. Please when you have a moment… check out my categories on the sidebar of my blog and look for Texas. I have blogged about Texas several times!! How exciting for the both of you!

    1. Thank you so much, Nancy!!! We are SO excited! Ahh I cannot wait to check out your posts- thank you tons for sharing with me!!

  2. congrats on all the exciting news in your life. it is always great when it feels like things just all fall into the right places. I hope the move goes smoothly and you love your new home

    1. Thank you tons!! I agree- when it all just falls together it’s easier to trust that it’s just right! 🙂

  3. So first of all, that blog post title… 😉 HA!!! You totally got me!
Second of all, congratulations, Girl!!! Sooooo exciting! I know how much you love your current home, but I also know that you will embrace Texas with the same joy, gusto, and food-loving adventurous spirit. 🙂 This is going to be so exciting!
I’m so happy for your guy and how all of his hard work paid off! God really does take care of His children, and it looks as though He is just opening ALL the doors for you. I cannot wait to read ALL about your journey!!! xoxo

    1. LOL! Click bait, right?! 😉

Aw thank you tons, Nicole!! That really means a ton. <3

God is so good! It's amazing how His plans fall into place even better than we could have orchestrated ourselves. I would have never dreamed we were opening up a campus in Austin this year-- just so cool.

Thank you for sharing in our excitement!! Have the best day 🙂 xo

    1. Aw yay! I’m really happy to hear that–we have only spent about 36 hours total there, so I really don’t even know what to expect! Have a great day- and thanks for stopping in, Kelley 🙂

  4. Yay! I’ve been looking forward to this post. And it is really cool how God has answered some of your anxieties as well! I’m so excited to be sharing a state with you soon!

    1. Isn’t God so good? It all came together better than I could have even imagined. & I’m sooo excited we’ll be in the same state too, Katy! No doubt we will have to meet for coffee sometime 🙂 Especially because hopefully I’ll be in FW/Dallas more too!

  5. Yes!!! It’s an amazing feeling when things seem to happen as if they were meant to. You’ll have SO much food to show us when you live in Austin. I hear great things.

    1. I so agree!!! We have only been for about 36 hours at most, but already fell in love with the foood! I’d be lyin’ if I said that wasn’t one of the main things I’m excited about!

      1. Not sure there are worse thoughts than being food deprived !! Hopefully you’ve made up for this in the days since !

      2. Dj will love that! Remember that huge chicken sandwich that I posted about 10 million times on every one of my social media platforms? That was when I realized just how true that whole saying was 🤣

  6. Austin is great! My sister goes to school out there so I go as often as I can. You have to see the Texas Hill country while you’re out there, it’s beautiful.

    1. AW I’m so excited to hear this!! I have heard great things about Hill country- gonna have to be one of our first stops when we get there 🙂 Thank you for sharing with me, Cadie!

  7. Congratulations to DJ! Well, you know I LOVE the Bay Area but if there is any other place I would consider leaving my beloved Calfornia for it would be Austin! Its a lovely city with great friendly people and it’s booming right now, a perfect time to move. You two will love it. Enjoy your new adventure and all the best!❤️

    1. Oh my goodness , how I love hearing this from you!!!! This encourages me so much & makes me even more excited about this decision. We haven’t spent hardly any time there so I really don’t even know much of what to expect— but wow, this is just the greatest thing I could have heard! Thank you for taking the time to stop in and share your thoughts, Kalpana! I would love to get coffee sometime before the big move at least once if you have the time ! 🙂 ❤️

      1. Absolutely! Lets meet for sure!! I’d love to have you over when my garden bursts into bloom, hopefully soon with all this sunshine 😊. Also, UT Austin is awesome! It reminds me so much of the Stanford campus with mature trees and Misiion style architecture. Look forward to meeting up soon!

      2. Oh my goodness, I would just LOVE that 😍 🌺 and finally this weather is turning up! 🤗 Now that you mention it —- I totallly agree about the campus! I bet that’s why I felt an extra fondness toward UT too while we were there. Can’t wait to meet up soon too! I didn’t see a contact page on your site- but if you want to message me through the “contact” section at the top maybe we can get in touch there ?! Have a great weekend, Kalpana! 🤗

  8. Girlfriend I am soo excited for you guys!!! You will just love Austin!!! I hope we get to meet in person when you get to Texas!!! Tell DJ congrats!!! What is he going to grad school for? I think you have mentioned it, but I can’t remember anything these days. Anyways so happy for y’all!!! Welcome to Texas!!!!

    1. Awww thank you, Taylor!!! A meet- up is a must! 🤗 he is going to grad school for his MBA! Ahhh I so love hearing that 😊 you are our first official “welcome to Texas”! we are just so darn excited !

  9. So exciting and don’t you love love love the way God works?? The odds of your church opening up a church in Austin? Clearly not coincidence and God is so very good all the time!! As a mom this makes me feel better as well about you two moving, plus I think you are in a slightly better time zone and slightly closer to us!!

    1. Yes !! He is so good ❤️ the closer time zone will be SO nice! I hadn’t thought about that much- but that’ll be a great bonus too!! Plus y’all will have a new place to explore with us 🤗

  10. Congratulations!! I read your blog but I don’t ever comment, but congrats on the big move for you and the big accomplishment for DJ! I’m in Austin, so let me know if you need any recommendations, etc!

    1. Aww thank you so much, Taylor!!! These are some of my favorite kind of comments 🙂 thanks so much for stopping in! we will take any and all recs!! We currently don’t have any … so whatever your favorite places to eat/ things to do, etc. we are allll ears !!! I so appreciate you reading 🙂

  11. Yayyyy! What an exciting time. Have you noticed how many of us bloggers are moving this year?! I was wondering if you would move to Texas after your post awhile back about your visit. I love how it worked out for you guys!! Totally seems like an open door from God to me! And huge congrats to DJ too! I’m so excited to read your future posts about your new adventure! And hey, we should totally share tips with each other about moving as we find them since we’re both moving out of state, lol. Huge hugs and I’m wishing you guys all the luck!! <3

    1. Yesss! It’s so exciting !!! I’ll pass on the sweet Congrats to him 🙂 and thank you tons for sharing in our excitement! We definitely have to share tips! Currently we have zero idea how we are physically gonna make the move- but looking into Ubox is a on the list of things to do thanks to youuu! 🤗 ❤️

      1. Hahaha I feel you there…figuring everything out is intimidating!! I am so happy we found out about the U-Box. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but it’s exactly what we needed. Most companies here won’t even drive that far for us. U-Box can also store it for you at a U-Haul facility if you won’t be available to access it right away, just choose your access date. Oh and you can select moving help to load it or unload it, etc. We are getting help loading it, but we will just unload it ourselves in Virginia Beach from the facility. It’s a lot to consider, but it’s still so exciting! What an adventure!!
Oh! I saw this tip on Pinterest about packing your plates with a foam plate in between each plate! Oh my gosh I thought that was genius. So smart!

      2. That is SO good to know!! Ah thank you for sharing such valuable info!!! We were worried about unloading our bed and some of the bigger Big Lots furniture we can’t part with (lol) so it’s really good to know that help is an option!

Such a fun adventure for all of us- I am giddy about the thought of us just filling one another in as the whole year unravels!

Oh my gosh- that is genius!!!! I am definitely going to do that. I also used clothing in my last move as padding to save on space! Have a great weekend, Courtney 🙂

      3. Of course!! It’s a lot of information to sort through so I’m happy to share whatever we have found lol. Having the moving help will be so great, especially if you either don’t have people available to help you or you don’t want to feel like you’re pressuring them or anything lol. XD

        Me too!!

Isn’t it?! I know I’m already going to feel so much more confident in packing our plates with that method. Ooh using clothing as padding is such a good idea! Saves on clothing space & padding materials. Thanks!! I hope you have a great weekend as well!! <3

    1. Hi, Nikki! Thanks so much ❤️ He is soo good- always love when His plans so clearly trump our own for so much better. Thanks for reading and stopping in!

    1. Oh my goodness this is the sweetest most encouraging comment- thank you soo much, Dr. Andrea ! I really appreciate you reading and leaving such kind words! Xoxo

  12. YAY!!! Wishing you a warm and early welcome to TEXAS!!!! You will love Austin!!! God’s hand was directly at work for you and DJ. Super excited for the days to come and I think that’s so awesome how you can continue school for yourself in Austin!

    1. Thank you , thank you, Shan!!!! ❤️ you are in Fort Worth area right? We will have to meet up once we make the big move!

  13. Maaaaack!!! I could just squeal!! Ah, so darn exciting! You two astound me. Just such determined, smart, driven people with so much to offer. I’m beyond excited for you!! Please give my congrats to DJ, & I wish you all the best in your move! ❤️❤️❤️

    1. Awwww thank you, Kori!!! 🤗 I will absolutely pass on the congrats! Thanks for sharing in our excitement 😊💕

  14. This is such exciting news Mackenzie – starting anew again and with your church having a campus in the same city – it makes everything come together and get a big bow on it to wrap up California and begin a new chapter in your life. Congratulations to you and DJ! (P.S. Do scope out the upstairs neighbors before picking your apartment!)

    1. Thank you so much, Linda!!! It really does feel like a big bow! Now I just have to make sure to actually finish my SF bucket list before we leave- pressure is on!

And I just laughed out loud about the neighbors! It’s one of my stipulations that the ceilings are THICK! 🤣

      1. Anyone who wants a personal tour of the wine country better get in line pronto! One of the first posts after I followed you Mackenzie was your friend visiting and your tour of SF and also the wine country. I hope you get some down time after school goes on hiatus and the move to finish up the SF bucket list. Yes, do yourself a favor and get the ceilings and neighbors squared away … this is a blessing in disguise for THAT problem as well!

      2. Awwww I love how sharp your memory is! This is so special <3

And I TOTALLY agree- I actually was thinking about this today that if our neighbors weren't so obnoxious it would be much harder to move because we just loved our apartment before this whole fiasco! Have a great weekend, Linda 🙂

      3. Yes, there is a silver lining there Mackenzie. Hope your new apartment will be on par with this one, and you have square away the church campus, and your Mom and Pete will be closer. It is all good. I do remember that post – there were so many things to see and I mentioned my boss was a Cabernet Sauvignon lover and liked doing the vineyard tours. You have a good weekend too Mackenzie. I went on a long walk and got caught in a snow squall (again).

      4. Aw yes I’m so thankful it’s all working out ❤️ so many blessings . And aw I remember that convo well 🙂 beginnings of our friendship!!!

Oh man, hopefully the snow wasn’t too brutal and you’re back home safe and sound!

      5. You will have something to look forward to this Summer, after you’re all moved in and acclimated to your new place. Yes, it was the beginning of our friendship Mackenzie. I think we might have turned the corner on the weather, even though they say some flurries Friday morning – they are not dramatizing it yet, so I’m hoping it does not cancel out a morning walk. This weekend is supposed to be super weather – I’m going to look around and find a new place to try out Hopefully one that no longer has snow or is ice covered. Must. Celebrate. Spring.

      6. Yayyyyy!!! Ah I am so excited for you this weekend is supposed to be better 🤗🌸

  15. Mackenzie I am absolutely ecstatic for you and your husband!!! Texas is amazing!! I have family there and I looove visiting!! I can’t wait to hear all of the adventures you have there! Your writing keeps me coming back for more! I can’t wait to hear what places you find when you move I’m so excited for the two of you!!! Congratulations girlfriend!

    1. Hi, Allison! Okay, your comment means the absolute world. Seriously- you just made my entire day!!! Thank you for your kind words and sharing in our excitement and for reading at all! ❤️ where in Texas is your family? If you are ever in Austin we’d have to meet up ! 🤗 have a great weekend, girl !

    1. Thank you tons, Lisa!!! We are so excited- and I’m excited that we’ll be in the same state! woohoo!

  16. Oh my goodness oh my goodness oh my goodness!!!! Mackenzie, I am so happy for you two, and a huge congratulations to DJ! God works in the most marvelous and mysterious of ways and I am in awe of how He beautifully orchestrated your church and DJ’s school to give you both an incredible peace and hope and assurance. (I was smiling reading your whole post!) What a great God we serve!!!

    1. Aw, Lauren!!! Thank you TONS for sharing in our excitement <3 Your comment just warmed my heart immensely. God really does work in the craziest, best ways!! I wasn't even sure if I should share all those nitty gritty details, but then I thought how amazing it is that God does care about our details- & your comment is so affirming! Have a great weekend, and I hope you are doing SO well <3

  17. I got chills reading this because everything just worked out SOO perfectly for you two! I couldn’t be more happier for both of you and your new adventure! I can’t wait to follow along in this new path of your journey 🙂

    1. Awww thank you, Em!!! Your comment means the world- thanks for being so supportive & excited for us in this transition!! <3

  18. Oh Mackenzie! I am so happy for you guys! All the congratulations to DJ, I love how he is so humble & nonchalant about everything. He’s going to do so many great things especially with such a supportive & loving wife!! ♡ The church opening up in Austin truly proves that everything happens for a reason & that your stars will always align. You two are gonna own Austin!!! Can’t wait to hear about all of your adventures there though I am sad we’ll be even further away than we already are now!

    1. Thank you sooo much, love!!! I will pass on the sweet congrats to him!

Awww – yeah he evens me out with all his even-keeledness (definitely not a word).

I am sad we will be further too, but I have to tell ya that Vegas is at the tippity top of my travel list! We must meet up when that happens. Thanks for sharing in our excitement & all your sweet support always. Have a great weekend, Hunida <3

  19. So exciting!!! CONGRATS DJ!!! I just love how honest you were about your reservations and how cool all of the “signs” were! You two are such a power couple, and I’m so excited to follow along with your journey!

Are you going to be closer to your mom and Pete??

    1. Aw thank you, Kaci! I’ll pass on the Congrats to him 🙂

I love that you remember my mom & Pete by name! Yes- we will only be about 4ish hours away- so not too bad! My mom also travels to Austin every once in a while for work so that’ll be nice to see her hopefully more frequently 🙂 Thanks for stoppin’ in & have a great week!!!

  20. Noooooooo that means I wont catch you if I go 😭😭
Lol I’m sorry that was a moment of panic lmao. CONGRATULATIONS!! when I saw the title I was like “where are you going?!!” Haha. To be honest I had a feeling it was going to be Austin because you mentioned it in your Austin post that it would be a great city to go to. And that was when DJ had his interview. It was just a matter of time before all the pieces fell into place. I’m so glad it all worked out in your favor.
Though I’m not religious, I do believe that the universe/higher power/God will hear you and reward you in the best way possible. And this is one of those times.
Though I’m sad that we might miss you when we go to SF, I’m so so so so stoked that you guys will be going to a place that you really want to go to and you’ll also get to further both of your careers and experience a whole new city. I wish I was able to travel because that’s one of the most fulfilling things in life. I think you’re gonna love Austin!!
Alex said that if we dont catch you in SF, then we might just head to Austin in the future when we can 😉 hope that doesn’t sound stalker-ish hahahaha

    1. Girl, I knowwwww 🙁 That has crossed my mind SO many times. But I might just need to make a trip out when you visit SF or at least I will send you a very detailed list of recommendations 🙂

Yess- I am so thankful it all just fell into place sooo perfectly <3

Ah, thank you tons & tons for sharing in our excitement, Rossy!!! My next goal will have to convince you to visit us in Austin, lol.
^^^ I wrote that before I read your last paragraph--- so not stalkerish at all- bahah, I would LOVE if y'all visited. One day one day <3 And hopefully a trip back to Portland for us in the next few years too!

      1. Lol a list of recommendations would be amazing since I lost the one I had lmao. I prefer places that are family friendly because of CL, and also places we can sight see. With your bestest places for food and desserts lol.
Ah then it’s done! We shall visit you in Austin as well! You guys plan on being in Austin for a while right?

      2. Yesss! I’ve got you covered!! I may have already told you this (I can’t remember), but I’ll probably make a big post with ALL recs too— and although we don’t have kiddos, I think we could guide you well with kid friendly options :)! There is SO much to do in SF! Eeek, okay I’ll try to calm it down haha.

We are definitely going to be in Austin for at least 2 years. If we like it we will *possibly* settle there. As of right now if we leave Austin after two years we will probably go to Denver, San Diego, or Ohio (of course, unforeseen job opportunities for DJ may show up- so those plans may be thrown out the window when the time comes, haha).

      3. I dont think you’ve told me but if you have I might have forgotten haha
Lol if it’s no trouble for you to assemble the list I’d say the more options the better that way we can pick and choose from those. I’m sure every place you recommend is lovely!
Ah okay well I’ll keep that in mind. Even if you move I’ll have to visit you wherever else you move to hahaha

      4. YESS! I love the sound of that!!! Hope you are having a great week, Rossy! 🙂

      5. Ahhh ! I hope it’s easy to get back in the swing of things tomorrow (er, today when you read this probably!). <3

  21. Omg huge congrats gorgeous!! This is the most amazing news ever, I am beyond happy for you both!! Can’t wait for all of the moving blog posts too xxx

  22. Congratulations to DJ! And happy adventures! I can’t wait to read about what you get up to in Austin:). I love how sometimes everything in life just falls into place like it was meant to be😀

    1. Aw thank you tons, AJ!!!! Me too- it’s quite serendipitous how it all came together ! ❤️

  23. I can’t even express how excited I am for you an DJ, sweet friend!!! God works in mysterious yet glorious ways!! I can’t wait to read all about your next adventures together in Austin. God has such big plans for you two!! <3

    1. Thank you tons, Sarah <3 <3 Thanks for sharing in our excitement love! I will pass on the Congrats to DJ!

  27. Congratulations to DJ and how exciting for you both!!! I can’t wait to see Austin through your eyes. I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing new adventure for you guys!

  28. Congrats! Getting to live in and explore a new city sounds so exciting. I don’t think I could ever live in Texas though, personally, but out of all the Texan cities, Austin seems like the best one.

    1. Thank you tons, Britney! I am sooo excited to explore!! It will probably be a bit of a culture shock for us, but I agree- if anywhere in Texas we are glad it’s Austin too 🙂 And if it isn’t for us we can bow out after two years when DJ completes the program! Thanks for stopping in & have a great rest of your weekend!

  29. I’m a bit late on catching up with the latest goss on your side but I just want to say I am so happy and sad at the same time: so sad you are leaving the Bay area and so happy that you are moving on to new endeavours!

    nataliesdailylife.wordpress.com

    1. Aww! I know it’s so very bittersweet!! <3 I'll have to live vicariously through you! Thanks for your sweet words, Natalie :) Also, I just realized I wasn't following you?! I thought I was, but something must have happened... so sorry! I'm excited to catch up !

  30. I admire how you guys do everything as a team. As someone who put herself through school and worked, I knew how much easier it would’ve been to have emotional and financial support and a stable home with a partner while doing so. (But marriage is in His timing!) I admire you guys doing it so well and am so happy for you! It’s how marriage should be!!! Oh yeah, and congrats to DJ about grad school…hello romantic girl who totally missed the point of this post LOL! :p

    1. Hi, Kristin!! Thank you soo much, girl <3 I totally hear youu- no doubt it is ALL is in His timing!! Thank you for your kindest words- and I'll pass on the sweet congrats to him ;) I always appreciate you sharing your heart. I hope you are doing well, my friend!

    1. Thank you tons, Anne!! I am so excited to explore the food scene… I’ve heard great things! But pressure is on to try everything before we leave too!

    1. Seriously?!? Oh I am so excited to hear this, Karalee! Thank you for letting me know. I may need to pick your brain for restaurant ideas 🙂 I’m soo happy to hear you loved it too!

  31. Hi Mackenzie, I am so happy for you both in taking on the next chapter in your lives , Austin Texas!! I have heard great things about this city and know you will embrace it like you did the San Jose/ San fran area. I can see DJ downplaying how good he did at the interview, he seems a very humble guy! I am glad that you can continue all your studies . It is good that you are at peace with the move even though you will miss where you are now. It will be a busy few months leaving one state for another. Wiill you be far from your Mom? Sending warm thoughts to you both, Terri xo.

    1. Hi, Terri! Thank you so much<3 He really is SO humble - I tell him he can at least brag to me sometimes 😉

It is going to be a super busy couple of months! especially planning my sister's bachelorette party and bridal shower AND school full time. But it will all get done as it always does 🙂 Thank you for stopping in!! xoxo

    1. Ahh so cool! That is really great to hear that you are loving it being from the Bay too. Thank you so much for stopping in & the welcome!

    1. Thank you SO much, Amitav!! This means a ton. I will pass on the congrats to DJ! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

  32. Wow! God is GOOD! Isn’t it amazing how He works out the details of our lives?! Never ceases to amaze me! I am so happy for you two! I can’t wait to hear how Austin is!

  33. Congratulations to DJ! and how about this huge life change for you both!

I am just catching up on your posts and I noticed you mention your move to Austin several times, so I’ve been rewinding through your older posts and finally found this announcement!

Soooooo glad you have peace and are excited about the next chapter in your journey! Looking forward to your adventures in Austin!

    1. Thank you sooo much, Ju Lyn! You’ve been one of my blog friends from the beginning so I just need you to know how much your support has meant over the years being in CA <3 I remember one time I was riding the bus into work really dreading it, feeling just flooded with anxiety and read a comment from you... it was the highlight of my day! I remember that sooo vividly. Thanks for being excited for this next chapter with us : )

      1. I am tearing just reading your message – I am always amazed and grateful how God uses those in our lives to remind us we are very much loved and in His care!

Your joy and long-suffering through school and work are such an inspiration to me. Reading your posts are a ray of sunshine in my day and I so look forward to when I can catch up with you in this way.

You are in my thoughts and in His hands … always!

      2. Aww I am always amazed by Him too! ❤️

Oh my gosh thank you for your kindest words. And I can say the same to you as well!! I always get so excited to see the slice of your beautiful world you share with us. Hope you have a beautiful week, dear friend!

  34. Great post! My husband and I just moved to Dallas, TX (from MA) for his job so I can totally relate. Hope your enjoying Texas so far!

    1. Aw thanks for stopping in, Linds! I can’t wait to follow along on your blog. Hope you all are adjusting nicely 🙂 I have family in Fort Worth actually so I’ll be excited to see what all you enjoy in Dallas ! Have a great week ahead 🤗
